5th Street Loft Development

Worked as project architect for architect, Timothy Rempel of Rempel + Lao, on this sustainably designed multi-unit live/work development. Our intention was to create a beautiful contribution to the neighborhood that brought a delicate and human sensibility to a very rough light industrial neighborhood.

My role included:

  • project management

  • design development

  • construction documentation

  • construction administration

Urban Infill

This project introduced affordable one and two bedroom units in a light industrial area in Berkeley, California. Specifications and detailing included:

  • Green SIP panel insulated roof

  • FSC Certified Woods

  • FSC Certified Lime Plaster

Humaness

Using natural materials increased the buildings’ humanness. We wanted to introduce a warm and inviting vibe in a neighborhood dominated by light industry.

Humanness is also in how a building supports the user. The sun in Berkely, typical of coastal areas, is often crisp and bright but it is combined with an air temperature that is moderate. This encouraged us to create outdoor spaces since they will be used daily throughout the year.

CD’s

I project managed the Construction Documentation Set for Permit Approval.

Sustainable Interior Design

Modern detailing and finishes included:

  • Radiant head-in floor hydronic system

  • FSC Certified Brazilian Cherry wood flooring

  • High efficiency hot water heaters

Sustainable Exterior Design

Specifications and detailing included:

  • FSC Certified Woods

  • FSC Certified Lime Plaster

  • Drought resistant landscaping

Locally crafted glass and steel detailing.

The craftsmanship that went into this development not only created respectful environments for the tenants but showed clear respect for the local fabricators.
